At what age should I introduce baby toothpaste?
It is recommended to start taking care of your baby gum even before the first tooth erupts.
Taking care of the baby teeth helps prevent cavities and maintain healthy teeth in the future.
From 0-18 months you are allowed only to use water with no toothpaste.
While your baby is still breastfeeding or taking formula milk only, you can use a damp washcloth to wipe the baby’s gum.
As the baby continues to grow you can start to introduce toothbrush so as your baby get used to it and adopt the habit.
You can use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush or finger brush.
Once the baby reaches 18 months, you can start introducing toothpaste.
How much toothpaste should toddlers and babies use
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) smear a little toothpaste about the size of grain rice for children between 18 months to six years.
Increase the amount slowly to a pea-sized when the child can spit out well.
Why do babies need unique toothpaste and not regular toothpaste?
Baby toothpaste has flavors that attract your child to love brushing.
Some flavors like strawberries are more baby friendly compared to mint which is tough on baby’s mouth.
Toddlers and babies should not use regular toothpaste.
Most of the regular toothpaste even the ones branded “Natural” has a chemical that can be harmful to your baby.
Babies three years and below have not developed the ability to spit out, so they are capable of swallowing and digesting the chemical in the regular toothpaste.
That’s why it is recommended to buy baby toothpaste for babies below three years
Also, they are a few ingredients that are not present in the baby’s toothpaste but are in adult toothpaste. Some of those ingredients pose danger to your baby. Such ingredients include:
There is a myth out there that most people think fluoride is the most ingredients that should be present in any toothpaste to prevent the cavities.
There are many ways to prevent cavities and mostly for babies you can use plain water (contain fluoride) and toothbrush.
You should avoid using baby toothpaste with fluoride.
When fluoride is swallowed, it is toxic, and since most babies below six years are not capable of spitting-out it is advisable To opt for the toothpaste that does not contain fluoride.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
The sodium lauryl sulfate is a common ingredient present in most toothpaste.
In some brands is listed as sodium laureth sulphate.
It is a harsh ingredient that has demonstrated to increase sore canker outbreaks.
There is no advantage to expose your baby to such harsh ingredients at this early stage of teeth development.
The essential oil is present in almost all regular toothpaste as an antibacterial agent.
At this early stage of oral development babies needs to develop their oral microbiome to protect cavities.
You do not need to kill it that why toothpaste with essential oil is not recommended.
